Standard Poodles are usually quite friendly and personable once they get comfortable around you. A well-trained Standard Poodle might seem shy at first, but once they get to know you, they will show all the love and affection you could ever want. They are very intelligent and perceptive dogs that are very loyal companions!

Standard Poodles are a non-shedding breed with curly coats. Their coat will catch loose hairs which prevents excessive shedding that most other dog breeds are prone to.  Thus, it is very important to regularly groom and clip the hair. Many poodle owners will have their Standard Poodle clipped to an even length all over, but there are many different styles you can achieve with a little creativity.

Poodles will need their coat trimmed at least once a month to keep it manageable and look their best. Most dog owners use a professional pet groomer that is experienced with Poodle coats. You can help your poodle by checking them over regularly to make sure that the coat is not getting into their eyes, which can cause irritation, or that the fur is not becoming matted around the feet and legs.

Standard Poodles are very intelligent dogs. Though they were originally used in sport or as a hunting dog, they are rarely used in those roles today. They do still possess the keen awareness and intelligence from their sporting past. Standard Poodles are fairly easy to train, and you will even see them compete in agility circuits on occasion.

Standard Poodles are not especially talkative compared to other dogs, but they will often bark to announce arrivals and anything that raises their awareness. Delivery persons and wildlife will alert them briefly, but your Poodle shouldn’t be barking all the time. If you notice your Standard Poodle is barking excessively, consider giving obedience lessons, training classes, or even a trip to the veterinarian just to be sure there aren’t other underlying issues.

Standard Poodles make excellent family dogs. They are often a little protective and very loving when it comes to their family. Standard Poodles may not be the best choice for homes with small children because of their size and energy level.
